Wires WildLife Rescue
Wildlife Rescue 7 days a week, 365 days a year
WIRES is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation. WIRES has been rescuing and caring for sick, injured and orphaned native animals for over 35 years. Their mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same.
WIRES operate a dedicated Wildlife Rescue Office assisting wildlife and the community across Australia 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, providing rescue advice and assistance for over 130,000 animals annually, as well as providing full-time mobile Wildlife Emergency Responders operating across Greater Sydney, South-East Queensland and Tasmania.
WIRES is working nationally with strategic partners to support the long-term recovery of wildlife habitat and the long-term preservation of native species in the wild.

Koala
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
The iconic Koala species has recently been listed as an endangered species vulnerable to extinction in NSW, ACT and QLD. WIRES work with a growing number of sick and injured koalas sent to specialised carers for rehabilitation.
Wombat
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
The Northern Hairy-nosed wombat is listed as Critically Endangered and is presumed extinct in NSW. Mange is the biggest threat to remaining wombat species in NSW, and is estimated to be present in 90% of local populations. WIRES has introduced a new Community Mange Treatment Program to help battle the disease.
Kangaroo
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
There are 15 species of kangaroos and wallabies in NSW, with a significant number now listed as threatened in NSW. Every year, WIRES attend to a growing number of joeys orphaned through vehicle collisions requiring specialised care before returning to the wild.
Echidna
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
Echidnas are Australia’s most widespread native mammal. Along with the platypus, they are the only monotremes – egg laying mammals. Every year, WIRES attend to a growing number of infant echidna ‘puggles’ orphaned through vehicle collisions needing specialised care before returning to the wild.
Galah
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
Galahs are found throughout Australia and are the most common species of the cockatoo family. Galahs can survive up to 25 years in the wild. Around breeding season in spring and summer, WIRES receives thousands of calls to rescue galahs and other native bird species.
Lizard
WILDLIFE EXTINCTION
Did you know that painted dragons have a special ability to survive in its habitat? Their scale colour and pattern can vary wildly across their habitat, like a colourful wardrobe for every occasion! ?
This makes them ultimate camouflage masters, blending seamlessly with the diverse soils they call home. So, next time you spot one, appreciate their fashion-forward approach to survival.
